Summer Break - Kankakee

We stayed outside of Chicago at a place called Kankakee, as it had a KOA  campground, and we booked a cabin, thinking it would be good to have space for the boys to run around and kick a ball, and still commutable to Chicago.   It was a lovely green campground, and the cabin was nice, but it was a 40 minute drive to the train station, which took an hour to get into Chicago, so it was quite a commute!
On Monday, we decided to have a look around the town.  We spent a lot of the morning at Kankakee park, which was right by the river.  It was a pretty nice park, which had a splash park in the summer time (it wasn’t open when we were there).   We also went and had a look at Kankakee State Park, which was nice for a drive, but we found that there was not a whole lot to see in Kankakee!

These pictures show the boys having fun at the park, and Spiderman in action to the left.  We had just left Castle Rock the other morning, when Quinn informed us he had 'tingles', like Peter Parker.  For anyone who is not a Superhero fan (and where have you been!) Peter Parker is Spiderman, and he gets his tingle when his 'spider-sense' kicks in, and is his warning that danger is about, and he will have to become Spiderman soon. I swear it would be nice to be in his world some days!

We went back to the park, and the boys were happy kicking the soccer ball around, and going up to the basketball court and playing.  We also got the volleyball from the office and had a game of volleyball, and Phil played Monopoly with the boys while I got some groceries.  Phew - I think it was less tiring to go sightseeing!  But it was lots of fun, and Ryan told me that he had the best day, and the best part was playing volleyball with Phil and I, so I guess that is the important stuff!
We had a fire, which the boys were pretty pleased about - they are fire bugs and fascinated by fire, as I guess most kids are, so we are trying to teach them to be responsible ?!#%  Anyway, we got some firewood from the office, and the boys collected some, and we had dinner and s'mores over the fire.  it was a fun afternoon, although we were completely smoked by the end of it.
